1996, two years after the release of his critically acclaimed album, Illmatic, Nas returned with his sophmore album, It Was Written. Laced with mafioso style beats and lyrics with tracks such as "The Message" and "Affirmative Action", and the creative "I Gave You Power" where he gives the perspective of himself being a gun, Nas keeps a chilling theme to the album. While incorporating Dr. Dre production, "Nas Is Coming", in a time when the east coast/west coast rivalry was at it's height, some controversey was sparked. Also, Nas sees his first commercial success with singles "Street Dreams" and "If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)" featuring Lauryn Hill, that propelled the album to platinum status. With production from heavyweights such as Trackmasters, DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, and Havoc, and guest appearances from The Firm, Mobb Deep and Lauryn Hill, some argue that it deviates from the underground feel of Illmatic. It's standing, though, has improved over time and is now considered an overall classic album.my favorite tracks: The MessageStreet DreamsI Gave You PowerTake It BloodAffirmative ActionIf I Ruled The WorldSilent Murder (Japanese, European CD Versions & US Cassette Tape Version Bonus Track)
